Compositing Portfolio
Compositing refers to the combination of animated components and/or special effects with real life video or images.

Both of the items in my compositing portfolio (Animal Testing and CompAussieTing) are complete items of work undertaken during my university course.

My second compositing project was an advertisement intended to promote Guinness. The implication is that the mouse has long coveted Guinness, and has finally managed to get together the necessary equipment to clamber up onto the bar to get to it.

The 'Animal Testing' subtitle is effectively a way of saying that instead of having ears grown on its back and shampoo dropped into its eyes, the mouse would much prefer to be a professional Guinness tester.

As you view the animation, I'd like you to try and spot as many 3D elements as you can. There are, in fact, five separate 3D models involved.

Unfortunately, due to time constraints at the time of creation (I was working on Mythworld, Animal Testing and four other projects simultaneously), certain elements didn't work as well as I hoped they would. With an extra week, I'm sure I could have ironed out the weaknesses.

Compaussieting Image CompAussieTing (2002)

For this animation, the video footage was provided by a course tutor. Our brief was to create a short animation that would firmly place a character in the room, making the viewer believe the character was as solid as the objects in the room.

I used the Aussie character I had developed for a previous animation (after first refining him a little.)

My main concern was devising some means of making him a physical object in the same way that one of the chairs might be. In the end, I hit upon the idea of him vomiting onto the table. As the vomit sticks to the surface of the table, we are therefore more inclined to believe the character is really there. We know he's not, but it helps with our suspension of disbelief.

If you look at the magazine he's been reading, the reason for his sudden 'outburst' becomes clear.
