Sad Songs
Lyrics

Something was given and

Something was taken and

Something forbidden set

Something else shaking

It was, a day, of bitter taste

-

SO YOU LISTEN TO, LISTEN TO, THE SAD, SAD SONGS

OH YOU LISTEN TO, LISTEN TO, THEM WHEN IT ALL GOES WRONG

THERE’S A FEELING INSIDE, THAT YOUR CHOICES DENIED

AND YOU'RE WONDERING WHERE YOUR JOY’S GONE

TO THE PAST YOU RETIRE, SEEKING SOLACE ENTIRE

AND CRUMBLING WHEN THERE IS NONE

-

Everything stolen and

Everything fated and

Everything chosen so

Everything’s wasted

It was, a month, of bitter taste

-

Nothing remaining and

Nothing of clarity

Nothing decisions made

Nothing reality

For, a year of bitter taste

Lowdown

The first two lines to the chorus of Sad Songs had been kicking around for about three years in my scrapbook. I had originally intended to write a song where every line in the song was the song title of a sad song written by someone else. I got about three lines down before I realised I didn't know enough sad songs and was trying to be too damn clever for my own good.

What happenened next was one of those rare moments where inspiration struck, and I wrote the whole song in a few minutes based on the experiences of a friend.

The final result is far better than my original idea and just goes to show it pays to hang onto those stray lyrics.
