B-Side - Maybe This Year

Lyrics

Ready - - - - - - - - - - - Ready - - - - - - - - - - - Ready

Ready – Ready – Ready – Ready Ready Ready Ready Ready Ready

-

Ready to shout, ready to cheer

Ready to bite our nails with fear

Ready to jump, when they win

Ready to sweat adrenaline

-

Leaping around with your mates in the pub

As England lift the World Cup

-

MAYBE THIS YEAR, MAYBE THIS YEAR

FOR ALL THE TIMES WE CAME SO NEAR

MAYBE THIS YEAR, MAYBE THIS YEAR

MAYBE OUR TIME IS REALLY HERE

-

Ready - - - - - - - - - - - Ready - - - - - - - - - - - Ready

Ready – Ready – Ready – Ready Ready Ready Ready Ready Ready

-

Ready to pass, ready to slide

Ready to wear the shirt with pride

Ready to live, it enthralled

Ready to kick, every ball

-

Leaping around with your mates in the pub

As England lift the World Cup

-

MAYBE THIS YEAR, MAYBE THIS YEAR

FOR ALL THE TIMES WE CAME SO NEAR

MAYBE THIS YEAR, MAYBE THIS YEAR

MAYBE OUR TIME IS REALLY HERE

-

Ready to revel in the moment

We’re gonna set the world in motion

Back Home there is commotion

Wearing masks of pure emotion

Ready, we’re ready, ready we’re ready

As two tribes go to war

Ready, we’re ready, ready we’re ready

To hear three lions roar

-

MAYBE THIS YEAR, MAYBE THIS YEAR

FOR ALL THE TIMES WE CAME SO NEAR

MAYBE THIS YEAR, MAYBE THIS YEAR

MAYBE OUR TIME IS REALLY HERE

Lowdown

I'd been meaning to write an England World Cup song for about five years, but in 2006 I finally got around to it. Parts of the chorus already existed in some form or other, and when I decided an old B-side called 'Riverside' wasn't really something I was happy with, Maybe This Year was put in as its replacement.

Three Lions showed that for a football song to be successful, it needs to have a simple, chantable chorus, reference the fans as well as the players (in order to give the fans emotional ownership) and be relatively upbeat.

Maybe This Year isn't as good as Three Lions, but I'd like to think it's better than Embrace's passionless effort.

The refrain at the end refers to four previous England songs that I particularly like - World in Motion, Back Home, Two Tribes and Three Lions.

The chorus is intended to be hopeful, although realistic about our chances of ever winning a world cup, and the entire song is written in such a way that it could refer to any world cup, rather than listing lots of players who won't be on the team sheet in 10 years' time.
